Introduction

India’s vision of good health implies not just being free of disease but to ensure wellness and welfare for everyone. The goal is to ensure physical, mental and social wellbeing.” — Shri Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India

“The future of our wellness lies where machines and algorithms meet our awareness, AI with a heart.” — Shri. Balvinder Kumar, IAS (Retd.), Former Secretary, Government of India

India’s growing focus on digital health, under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) and National Mental Health Programme (NMHP), underscores the need for scalable, technology-enabled mental wellness ecosystems. In this context, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a transformative force — enabling early diagnosis, continuous monitoring, and accessible mental health care through personalized, data-driven interventions.

From AI-powered diagnostic models and predictive analytics to emotionally intelligent chatbots and virtual counselors, technology is bridging the persistent gap between mental health needs and care availability, particularly in underserved and rural populations.

Recent (2025) studies demonstrate how conversational AI, trained on real-world behavioral and linguistic data, can support early detection and intervention for stress, anxiety, and depression — particularly among youth, working professionals, and vulnerable groups. These tools foster empathy, accessibility, and proactive engagement while supporting clinicians and psychologists in providing timely care.

However, this new frontier also introduces ethical, regulatory, and governance challenges, particularly around data privacy, algorithmic bias, and clinical validation. To ensure responsible adoption, there is a pressing need for multi-stakeholder dialogue aligning policy frameworks, innovation, and social responsibility.

The Global Summit on AI for Mental Health seeks to catalyze such a dialogue — serving as a collaborative platform where policymakers, health institutions, researchers, startups, and social sector leaders come together to co-create a roadmap for responsible, inclusive, and impactful AI-driven mental healthcare.

A mentally resilient India is not only essential for individual wellness but also a cornerstone for economic productivity, social harmony, and national progress. Realizing this vision demands a whole-of-society approach — where government, industry, academia, and civil society unite to make mental healthcare universal, stigma-free, and driven by empathy and innovation.
